This National Science Foundation project grant of $749,999 will support Wichita State University's efforts to improve retention and graduation rates for low-income, high-achieving undergraduate engineering students through 2028. Funded by NSF's Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics program (S-STEM, CFDA 47.076), the university will provide scholarships totaling $18,750 per student over four years to 24 students in engineering technology, computer science and cybersecurity, industrial systems and manufacturing engineering, and electrical and computer engineering. Scholarship recipients will participate in skill-building activities, a new first-year experience course involving real-world engineering problems and co-ops, and receive mentoring from trained faculty and industry mentors to develop their engineering identity and sense of belonging in the field. The goal is to increase STEM degree completion among low-income students and address workforce needs in Wichita's aerospace industries.
