This three-year project grant from the National Science Foundation's Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences aims to establish ethical reasoning as a regular component of mathematical practice. With funding of $141,714, Ferris State University will convene instructors in Year 1 to develop learning outcomes and materials integrating ethical reasoning into foundational mathematics courses. In Years 2-3, participants will gather input from business, industry, and government stakeholders and refine authentic problems. They will also host workshops to promote adoption of the tested instructional materials among additional faculty and broader learner groups. The work supports the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) goal of strengthening the nation's scientific enterprise through increasing mathematical knowledge and understanding major challenges.
