This $288,835 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Office of Integrative Activities will fund a collaborative research project titled "Arctic, Climate, and Earthquakes (ACE): Seismic Resilience and Adaptation of Arctic Infrastructure and Social Systems amid Changing Climate." The award will support research and education activities over a five-year period from January 2023 through December 2027.
The project aims to improve understanding of how Arctic changes impact seismic preparedness and response through monitoring of infrastructure, centrifuge modeling of permafrost thawing impacts, and co-development of equitable resilience capacities with local communities. Specific objectives include assessing infrastructure seismic response under climate impacts, modeling and evaluating seismic resilience, and conducting outreach including youth training camps. The University of Alaska Fairbanks will lead the effort in collaboration with other universities. The award is part of the NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which supports basic research to increase understanding of Earth systems through atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences.
