The University of Southern California will receive $240,634 from the National Science Foundation under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct collaborative research from August 1, 2022 to July 31, 2025. The research aims to illuminate fundamental climate processes that influenced terrestrial ecology in western Pangea during Earth's previous icehouse period between 304-280 million years ago. Researchers will identify the stratigraphic position of the Carboniferous-Permian boundary in Utah's Cutler Group rocks and correlate the sequence to the geologic timescale. Isotope geochemistry and magnetostratigraphy will determine the pace and intensity of regional climate drying during the Late Paleozoic Ice Age maximum. Researchers will also elucidate the patterns and processes driving the evolution of paleoequatorial Carboniferous-Permian vertebrate communities. Outreach activities will include educational field experiences and workshops serving Native communities in Utah. Research findings will be shared at natural history museums to strengthen public understanding of Earth system science.
