The Regents of the University of Minnesota received a $398,967 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct collaborative research calibrating the pace of paleotropical environmental and ecological change during Earth's previous icehouse period from 304 to 280 million years ago. The research aims to identify the stratigraphic position of the Carboniferous-Permian boundary and correlate rock units to the geologic timescale, determine the pace and intensity of climate drying in the region and its relationship to the late Paleozoic ice age maximum, and elucidate the patterns and processes driving the evolution of paleoequatorial Carboniferous-Permian vertebrate communities. The award also supports rural outreach and educational activities with partners serving Native communities, including field experiences for Jemez Pueblo students and teacher workshops. Research findings will be shared at natural history museums.
