This $277,284 National Science Foundation project grant will fund the Research Foundation for the State University of New York to design a residency-based computer science teacher preparation program in partnership with Lockport City School District. The goal is to increase access to K-12 computer science courses and train qualified teachers through a community-based, justice-oriented approach.
Specifically, the award will support the development of CS curricular pathways for the high school and a pre-service teacher residency partnership between SUNY Buffalo and the school district. A youth bootstrapping CS course and subsequent community bootstrapping course taught by the youth will build situated understanding of computing to empower community participation in the project's CS design committee. This committee will create effective, equitable models for increasing all students' access to CS offerings through broad stakeholder involvement. The research also aims to establish a regional CS practice community in Western New York while offering replicable design processes. Funded under the $47.07 million Computer and Information Science and Engineering program, this project addresses the National Science Foundation's mission to support computing research and education.
