This five-year, $289,251 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund the development of an integrated hydrologic model to better understand groundwater dynamics in the Great Lakes Basin. The grantee, Southern Methodist University, will fuse hydrologic modeling with GPS, satellite imagery, and GRACE data to more accurately simulate surface and subsurface flows. Through data assimilation, the project will produce historical and forecast groundwater flow and storage datasets to reveal the spatial and temporal distribution of groundwater across the basin and relate this to fluctuating lake levels. This integrated modeling approach for the first time combines geodetic measurements, remote sensing of surface water extent, and hydrologic modeling. The results will provide reliable information on surface and groundwater storage, lake levels, and flow rates needed to support water resource management in the Great Lakes region.
