This $128,607 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), will fund collaborative research characterizing iron deposits in Puerto Rico between August 1, 2022 and July 31, 2025. The research aims to elucidate metal transport and magnetite mineralization processes in skarn systems by characterizing three unstudied iron ore deposits in Puerto Rico. Field mapping, geochemistry including iron and oxygen stable isotope analysis of magnetite, and geochronology of garnets will be conducted to better understand the timing and relationships between metal transport, fluid flow events, and magmatic activity in the deposits. The research is expected to provide foundational knowledge on where and how iron ore deposits form. It will also provide research and field opportunities for at least 10 undergraduate and 4 graduate students from Auburn University in Alabama and the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, fostering a diverse early career scientist collaboration called AURUM between the institutions.
