This $547,758 National Science Foundation project grant supports the development of a next-generation high-pressure laser floating zone furnace at Rice University. The furnace will enable the growth of novel material single crystals that cannot currently be synthesized due to limitations of conventional furnaces. It will operate at gas pressures up to 1,000 bars, significantly expanding the range of materials that can be stabilized as melts and grown as single crystals.

The furnace will be part of Rice University's shared equipment program and accessible to researchers throughout Texas and the southern U.S. Its development continues innovation in high-pressure floating zone technology pioneered by the University of California, Santa Barbara under two $TBD subawards. The furnace's operation will advance research in materials synthesis across the mathematical and physical sciences, in line with the goals of the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program.
