The National Science Foundation awarded a $599,750 Project Grant to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley through the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to improve the quality of learning among physics students. The University will implement Team-Based Learning approaches in multiple lower-division and advanced physics courses over a three-year period from July 2022 to June 2025. Team-Based Learning is an interactive instructional strategy that replaces passive learning with active engagement techniques shown to promote deeper learning and enhance collaborative skills. The University aims to train faculty in developing TBL curriculum and improve students' conceptual understanding, problem-solving abilities, and competencies like critical thinking and communication through working on applied physics problems in permanent student teams. The project also seeks to study implementation issues and sustainability of active learning environments in physics classes to provide a model for other institutions.
