The National Science Foundation awarded Mississippi State University a $2,203,088 project grant under the Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083) to support the acquisition of an 800 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer. The NMR spectrometer will enable new biomolecular and chemical research capabilities in Mississippi through investigations such as exploring how microorganisms attach to surfaces, understanding ion channel regulation in the heart, characterizing metal-ion gene regulation mechanisms, and monitoring small molecule responses to metabolic changes. It will also allow development of new methods for synthesizing polymeric and organometallic materials. A total of 19 investigators, 64 graduate students, 72 undergraduate students, and 7 postdoctoral trainees will directly utilize the NMR spectrometer, in addition to other users benefitting through new courses at Mississippi State University focusing on solution NMR theory and instrument installation. Data collected on the NMR spectrometer will be shared broadly to advance scientific knowledge.
