This National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences Project Grant of $478,929 will fund collaborative research on reaction pathways during the alteration of seafloor mantle rocks by seawater, known as serpentinization. This three-year award to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution beginning August 1, 2022 will conduct laboratory experiments to better understand the underlying processes of serpentinization. The results will improve models and allow scientists to better interpret altered mantle rocks and fluid compositions. As part of the Geosciences program under the CFDA number 47.050, this award will provide student training in geological oceanography, petrology, and aqueous geochemistry. Underrepresented minority undergraduate students will be involved in project design, sample analysis, data interpretation, and presenting results. Findings will be disseminated through open access publications, conferences, seminars, and teaching to strengthen the national scientific enterprise's understanding of the integrated Earth system through basic research in ocean sciences.
