This $256,000 National Science Foundation Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships Project Grant to Itomography Corporation supports the development of dual-modality tomography core scanning technology for oil saturation estimation at wellsites. The Phase I project will demonstrate the feasibility of determining three-dimensional hydrocarbon distribution throughout large-diameter cores with high spatial resolution of 10 cubic millimeters, 95% accuracy, and a throughput of 1 meter per hour using x-ray multi-energy computed tomography and electrical impedance tomography in a single wellsite instrument. Algorithms will be developed and tested on digital core models to synergistically combine data from the two modalities to yield near real-time 3D hydrocarbon distribution mapping in cores. The goal is to prove the specified target accuracy, resolution and scanning throughput can be achieved to assess hydrocarbon distribution in cores in a disruptive innovation that could reduce costs and increase efficiency in oil exploration and production operations.
