- Federal Grant Award Summary Dr. Etienne Palos received a $300,000 NSF Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS-ASCEND) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (CFDA 47.049) awarded August 1, 2025, through July 31, 2028, hosted at the University of California, Berkeley under the mentorship of Dr. Martin Head-Gordon. The fellowship supports the development of correlated wavefunction theory (WFT) methods and computational algorithms to advance the discovery and identification of new molecules and ions in...
- This three-year, $749,453 National Science Foundation project grant funds research at the California Institute of Technology into the atmospheric oxidation of volatile chemical products and their impact on air quality. Led by Drs. Paul Wennberg, Brian Stoltz, and John Crounse, the research team will study the chemical reactions of oxygenated hydrocarbons as they degrade in the atmosphere. A major focus is whether radical autoxidation pathways produce highly oxygenated compounds that contribute...
- This National Science Foundation project grant award of $492,628 supports collaborative research towards better understanding the atmospheric fate of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Funded under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), the research will quantify thermodynamic properties influencing PFAS phase partitioning, estimate atmospheric lifetimes against hydroxyl radical chemistry, and investigate reaction mechanisms. Beginning September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2025, the...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Mathematical Sciences awarded a $150,000 Project Grant to support a POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2025. The grant was awarded under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), which aims to promote progress in mathematical and physical sciences and strengthen the nation's scientific enterprise. Funding will support research activities conducted in New York, NY from 2021-2025 that further the...

- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $259,132 Project Grant to Carnegie Mellon University under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Program (CFDA 47.049) to investigate peroxy radicals, which are highly reactive organic molecules that play a critical role in atmospheric and combustion chemistry. The project aims to develop a new and improved method for measuring these important chemical species using advanced mass spectrometry techniques. If successful, this work will provide...
Dr. Emily Franklin was awarded a $300,000 National Science Foundation Mathematical and Physical Sciences Ascending Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (NSF MPS-ASCEND) project grant to conduct research from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2025. The grant supports Dr. Franklin's research project titled "MPS ASCEND: Characterizing Contributions of Volatile Chemical Products to Aerosol Chemistry and Composition in the Modern Megacity." Under this award, Dr. Franklin will (1) establish molecular and compositional markers of secondary aerosol formation from volatile chemical products through laboratory oxidation experiments, and (2) characterize and quantify the impact of these products on aerosol levels and composition under ambient conditions in a coastal megacity. Laboratory experiments will examine oxidation of consumer products under realistic use conditions. An observational campaign in the New York City region will further the stated objectives. The work has the potential to inform models predicting future urban air quality. The grant is funded by the National Science Foundation Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences' Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049).
