Project Grant 2212083
- The National Science Foundation Division of Environmental Biology awarded a $193,752 Project Grant to the Regents of the University of Minnesota under the Biological Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.074). The award will fund collaborative research from July 2022 through June 2026 to study the impacts of severe drought on tropical forest post-disturbance recovery in Puerto Rico. Specifically, researchers will conduct a rainfall manipulation experiment in a forest recovering from...
- This two-year, $398,084 National Science Foundation project grant funds research at the University of California, Davis to study the effects of mega-wildfires on lake ecosystems in Northern California. Specifically, the award supports examining whether fish populations are eradicated in some or all lakes following wildfires over 1 million acres in size, and whether fish removal changes trophic cascades within the food web. It also analyzes how trophic cascade strength may vary with ecosystem...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $199,914 Project Grant under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) to the University of Wisconsin (UW) System's UW-Madison campus on June 1, 2024. The grant supports a rapid response research project to study the effects of the 2023 wildfires in Canada's Wood Buffalo National Park on soil carbon cycling. Specifically, the researchers will collect pre- and post-wildfire soil samples to quantify carbon losses due to combustion versus...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $195,763 Project Grant under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) to Oregon State University (OSU) to investigate the ecosystem-level impacts of the 2023 Lookout Fire along Lookout Creek in Oregon. The research aims to understand changes in stream ecosystem structure and function, focusing on microbial decomposition, aquatic vertebrates, and riparian wildlife. Key activities include assessing microbial decomposition rates, conducting...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary The Science Museum of Minnesota received a $233,888 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Division of Environmental Biology under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074), effective September 1, 2025 through August 31, 2030. This collaborative Long-Term Research in Environmental Biology (LTREB) project investigates the dynamics of extreme climate disturbance in Arctic lakes, specifically examining rapid ecosystem degradation in West...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $211,210 Project Grant to the Regents of the University of California at Riverside under the Biological Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.074) for the period of August 1, 2021 through July 31, 2024. The grant will support collaborative research examining the role of soil microbiome resilience in ecosystem recovery following severe wildfire. As part of the Biological Sciences program's goal of strengthening the nation's biological research...
- This Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) is providing $107,197 to North Dakota State University to investigate the impact of wildfires on soil microbial communities and agricultural recovery in western North Dakota. The award, effective March 1, 2025 through February 28, 2026, will support high-resolution microbial and biochemical analyses across three critical post-fire time points to track shifts in microbial composition,...
- Project Grant Summary The National Science Foundation's Division of Environmental Biology awarded $251,815 to the Regents of the University of Minnesota (effective January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2030) to conduct collaborative research on beaver-based stream and riparian ecosystem restoration. Under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074), researchers will deliver a comprehensive five-year field study and complementary laboratory experiments evaluating how beaver reintroduction and...
- Colorado State University was awarded a $571,256 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Environmental Biology under the Biological Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.074) for the period of August 1, 2021 through July 31, 2024. The grant will support collaborative research examining the role of soil microbiome resilience in ecosystem recovery following severe wildfires. As part of its mission to promote progress in the biological sciences and strengthen the nation's...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Environmental Biology awarded a $632,493 Project Grant to the Regents of the University of Minnesota Office of Sponsored Projects Administration to support collaborative research testing for nutrient limitation in alpine snow algae ecosystems. The research will be conducted from January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2024 under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074). The Biological Sciences program aims to promote progress in the biological...
The National Science Foundation Division of Environmental Biology awarded a $109,391 Project Grant to the Regents of the University of Minnesota, doing business as the University of Minnesota Duluth, to study lake ecosystem responses to the 2021 Greenwood wildfire in northern Minnesota. Under the Biological Sciences (CFDA 47.074) federal grant program, a group of researchers will document any changes to water quality in approximately 15 burned and unburned lakes near the 10844-hectare Greenwood fire from spring 2022 through late summer 2022. The researchers will visit the lakes five times to measure physical, chemical, and biological responses following snowmelt and rainfall, which are expected to transport ash and burned materials into the lakes. The results of this study will help water managers predict impacts to lake and reservoir water quality from future wildfires.
