Montana State University received a $189,528 project grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Environmental Biology under the Biological Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.074) for the period of February 1, 2022 through January 31, 2023. The award will support research investigating the effects of a dam malfunction and resulting drought on aquatic insect emergence in the Madison River in Montana. Specifically, the university will quantify salmonfly density, biomass, and emergence timing before and after the drying event using field observations, laboratory experiments manipulating drought conditions, and simulations of insect nutrient export under varying drought scenarios. The research aims to further understanding of how global change alters nutrient cycles by changing aquatic insect hatches and severing ties between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. It will also support training of one postdoctoral scholar and several undergraduate students.
