This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's $240,000 Computer and Information Science and Engineering program will support the development of a stateful switch architecture and network abstraction for in-network computing. Specifically, the awardee will create (1) a stateful switch architecture to flexibly manage, compute, and share distributed applications' state beyond traditional packet processing, (2) a network-wide abstraction and runtime to program and operate proposed stateful switches collectively within data centers, and (3) representative applications and test cases to guide architectural design tradeoffs for in-network computing. This work conducted by President and Fellows of Harvard College from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2026 has the potential to significantly enhance large-scale computation widely used in research, government, and business across all economic sectors by addressing current data center computing constraints.
