Marquette University will receive $550,224 over three years from the National Science Foundation's Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) through a Project Grant award to study biomass char particle morphology during gasification. Specifically, the University will perform direct three-dimensional pore-resolving simulations for hundreds of biomass char particles from various feedstocks that will be imaged using high-resolution X-ray microcomputed tomography. This will provide insights into how real biomass char morphology impacts gasification rates and reactor outputs. The University will also develop an automated workflow to quantify and model the range of particle morphologies, consisting of image analysis and machine learning to classify particles by expected gasification behavior. Efficient physics-based gasification models will then be created and parameterized for incorporation into reactor-scale computational fluid dynamics codes to improve predictive capabilities. The work will advance understanding and modeling of biomass gasification beyond current assumptions to support clean bioenergy technologies.
