The University of Maryland, College Park will use a $250,000 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to demonstrate an active optical device combining phase-change and two-dimensional materials. The three-year award beginning September 1, 2022 will support developing novel phase-change materials transparent in the visible spectrum and compatible with any substrate. Microheaters composed of graphene and other two-dimensional materials will provide fast heating and cooling to efficiently control the phase-change materials' modulation of light. If successful, the platform could enable technologies like metasurfaces, optical filters, novel computing architectures, and reconfigurable photonics beyond traditional silicon platforms. The University System of Maryland is the parent organization of University of Maryland, College Park, the primary awardee.
