Project Grant 2208845
- This two-year, $276,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation will fund research investigating the early stages of species diversification. The awardee will conduct integrative research examining how an organism's local environment shapes the evolution of its physical traits and genetic makeup. Specifically, the awardee will characterize incipient divergence among flowering plants by examining floral trait variation in the recently radiating Castilleja genus. Genomic and...
- This $750,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) supports collaborative research on the evolution and development of fundamental plant reproductive structures called sporangia. Led by the New York Botanical Garden, this interdisciplinary project will investigate the molecular genetics of sporangium development in the model fern Ceratopteris. The research aims to elucidate the core genetic network underlying sporangium...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Biological Sciences (CFDA 47.074) project grant award of $396,938, effective from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2028, will support a collaborative research project to investigate the genetic basis of complex floral trait adaptation between bee- and hummingbird-pollinated plant species. The research team, led by the University of South Carolina, will use advanced genomics technologies to identify specific DNA differences that underlie the integrated floral...
- This Project Grant award of $477,249.00 from the National Science Foundation's Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) aims to bridge the gap between molecular studies and fossil evidence to better understand the evolution and diversification of flowering plants, also known as angiosperms. The key products and services to be delivered under this grant include: The project will use advanced techniques like optical superresolution microscopy, deep learning, and new methods for reconstructing...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a two-year, $138,000 Project Grant to support research titled "Ovposition-Relevant Gustatory Receptor Evolution as a Missing Link Governing Insect-Host Plant Specialization." The grant falls under the Foundation's Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074), which aims to promote progress in the biological sciences and strengthen the national scientific enterprise through increasing scientific knowledge and understanding of major problems...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) provides $371,044 to support research by four master's students at James Madison University (JMU) studying the biology of leafflower moths and their host plants. The students will investigate the genetics, bacterial diversity, and biology of these insects, which have evolved from mutualistic to parasitic relationships with their host plants. The award also funds summer research...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) provides $806,156 to the Regents of the University of California at Riverside to conduct research exploring the mechanisms and repeatability of speciation with gene flow. The project aims to uncover how new species form by investigating whether the location of genes in a genome makes them more likely to contribute to species separation. In addition to the research objectives, the award...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $138,000 Project Grant to support research under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) from August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2023. The grant funds postdoctoral research at Utah State University in Logan, Utah to study the evolution of extended floral phenotypes. The Biological Sciences program aims to advance the field and strengthen the national scientific enterprise through basic research on major problems. This award will further those goals by...
- This $240,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) Project Grant award, with a performance period from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2027, will fund a postdoctoral research fellowship to investigate the role of symbiosis in driving the evolution and diversification of Hawaiian cixiid planthoppers. The research aims to leverage the unique geography and biodiversity of Hawaii to understand how microbial partnerships may contribute to host species diversity...
- This National Science Foundation Project Grant award of $240,000 provides funding from September 1, 2023 through August 31, 2026 to support research examining the genetic, physiological, and environmental drivers of plant-pollinator niche dynamics across scales of biological organization. The award is made under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) to promote progress in the biological sciences and strengthen the scientific enterprise through increased knowledge and understanding of...
This $276,000 National Science Foundation award under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) will fund research and training on the origin and evolution of nectaries in non-flowering plants. Jacob S. Suissa will conduct a three-part research program exploring when, why, and how nectaries first evolved by integrating data on the timing of nectary evolution in ferns and flowering plants with major insect radiations. Suissa will use RNA sequencing of diverse fern species to uncover genes underlying nectary development in ferns, and comparative transcriptomics to determine if genes expressed in fern nectaries are similar to those in flowering plants. Finally, comparative genomics across land plants will aim to pinpoint when this genetic toolkit first evolved. In addition to his research, Suissa is committed to science communication and outreach through social media, as well as mentoring underrepresented students. This 24-month project grant will support innovative integrative research investigating the rules of life governing plant-animal interactions and phenotypes.
