This $2.545 million Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Physics, under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), will fund a research program in ultralow-temperature atomic physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2027.
The program aims to study the fundamental properties of molecules and materials at the atomic level using precision control methods from atomic physics. Two major research directions include investigating the properties of magnetic materials using rubidium, lithium, and dysprosium atoms, and pursuing quantum control of chemistry through reactive and inelastic collisions of sodium lithium molecules with themselves or sodium atoms. This work seeks to advance understanding of magnetic phases and dynamics, realize quantum phases with non-trivial topological properties, and provide novel insights into molecular reaction complexes. Results will educate students and prepare them for advanced technology careers while also being communicated to the public.
