This three-year, $153,949 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) supports research to create a unique catalog of open star clusters in the Milky Way disk through observations and analysis. The University of Utah will observe nearly all suitable open star clusters using spectroscopy from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey V and astrometry from the Gaia satellite. Additional high-resolution spectroscopy will measure abundances of more than 20 elements. This publicly-released catalog comprising up to 90% of Gaia-confirmed open clusters with homogeneous data on ages, distances, reddening, dynamics and detailed elemental abundances will provide key constraints on the chemical evolution of the Milky Way disk over time. It will also help test models of stellar migration and supernova element yields. The data set will further the goals of the NSF program to advance mathematical and physical sciences knowledge and understanding of major problems.
