The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory will receive $190,606 under a Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Astronomical Sciences to conduct the ALMA CMZ Exploration Survey. The Observatory will lead critical components of the Survey to map gas flows and star formation across the entire central region of the Milky Way galaxy, known as the Central Molecular Zone. Products will include a catalog of extended and compact gas and protostellar mass components in the Zone, as well as a kinematic model of gas motions. The research represents an unprecedented combination of observational capabilities to make definitive measurements of inflow, outflow, star formation, and black hole accretion rates in a galactic nucleus. The award supports the Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to advance scientific knowledge and understanding of major problems through astrophysical research.
