This three-year, $314,904 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) supports collaborative research on tidal disruption of stars by massive black holes at Northwestern University. The researchers will bring together experts in hydrodynamics, general relativity, and radiative transfer to address gaps in understanding tidal disruption events (TDEs) through multi-scale modeling and numerical experiments isolating key processes. This includes simulations of the disruption itself, debris disk formation, jet production, and emanating radiation. Additionally, the researchers will partner with arts and education programs to cross-train computational scientists and visual arts students using simulations, with the goal of increasing diversity in computational astrophysics. The funding will allow isolation and study of physical mechanisms at different scales involved in TDEs, offering insight into black hole properties, stellar dynamics in galactic nuclei, and black hole accretion over short timescales.
