This $206,240 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Astronomical Sciences will fund research and educational activities to advance understanding of galaxy formation and evolution processes through multi-wavelength studies of circumgalactic media (CGM). Specifically, the University of Colorado researchers will (1) use machine learning to interpret new X-ray data in light of hydrodynamical simulations to constrain CGM physics, (2) explore using radio and fast radio bursts to probe CGM over cosmic time, and (3) develop machine learning to estimate galaxy group masses combining optical and X-ray images. The researchers will also develop community tools to maximize scientific returns from upcoming multi-wavelength astronomical surveys. This award supports one graduate student and a program to recruit, train, mentor and support undergraduate STEM students in CGM research. The funding falls under the NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), which supports progress in these fields to strengthen the nation's scientific enterprise.
