Yale University was awarded a $332,717 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Astronomical Sciences under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to advance understanding of the physics of gaseous halos surrounding galaxies. The researchers will lead a coordinated effort combining state-of-the-art galaxy simulations with new multi-wavelength survey data to advance knowledge of the physical processes shaping the circumgalactic medium over cosmic time. Specifically, the researchers will place novel machine learning constraints on circumgalactic physics by interpreting X-ray data in light of simulation results, explore using radio and fast radio bursts as probes of the circumgalactic medium over time, and develop a machine learning technique to estimate galaxy group masses combining optical and X-ray images. The award will also support related graduate student and undergraduate research training activities.
