The National Science Foundation Division of Chemistry awarded Florida State University $450,000 under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.049) from August 1, 2022 to July 31, 2025. The funding supports the development of new methods to advance the capabilities of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy through two complementary approaches to significantly improve NMR sensitivity and lower detection limits for a wider range of target molecules. Dr. Sungsool Wi and his team at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory will leverage technological and conceptual breakthroughs in low-viscosity supercritical solvents and hitherto unknown relaxation processes in biradicals to enable sensitivity-enhanced dynamic nuclear polarization spectroscopy at high fields on approximately 100 microliter solution-state samples containing dilute organic molecules. The aims are to potentially establish a new paradigm in NMR and provide new opportunities for characterizing molecules in scientific and industrial applications including pharmaceuticals, metabolites, natural products, food/polymer additives, and small crude oil molecules.
