The National Science Foundation Division of Mathematical Sciences awarded a $129,774 Project Grant to the University of California Santa Cruz to support research titled "Subgroups in Artin Groups and Lattices in Products of Trees" from November 15, 2021 to June 30, 2024.
The grant funding will support research into mathematical subgroups and lattices under the NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049). This program aims to advance scientific knowledge and understanding in core mathematical and physical sciences disciplines. Specifically, the University of California Santa Cruz will investigate subgroup structures within Artin groups, which generalize braid groups, as well as lattices in products of trees, furthering theoretical understanding in abstract algebra and geometric group theory. Outcomes will include new mathematical insights with the potential to stimulate additional discovery across scientific domains relying on advanced mathematics.
