This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program provides $480,000 to the University of California, San Diego from August 2022 through July 2025 to support research into controlling magnetic excitation pathways at the molecular level via design of anisotropic dipolar spin arrays. Principal Investigator Jeffrey D. Rinehart and his team will conduct research combining inorganic, organic, theoretical and computational chemistry toward designing magnetic interactions in single molecules in a manner analogous to bar magnets. Insights from this work aim to inform models of spin relaxation and quantum information science entanglement mechanisms. The award will primarily support graduate and undergraduate students engaged in the research. Outreach to the Preuss School UC San Diego is also included to support goals of increasing access to higher education.
