This $456,907 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program will fund research into metal-free bond activation using redox-active carborane clusters. Principal Investigator Dmitry Peryshkov of the University of South Carolina will synthesize cluster compounds of boron, carbon, phosphorus and hydrogen that can donate and accept electrons to cycle through two-electron redox states. The compounds' redox activity will be utilized to enable bond activation reactions, studying the oxidative addition of substrates to diphosphine-carboranyl molecules. Thermodynamic and kinetic parameters for bond activations promoted by these clusters will be established through studies reducing unsaturated carbonyl compounds. The award also aims to expand fundamental knowledge of main group chemistry and increase participation in research from underrepresented demographic groups in STEM.
