This $1,000,000 three-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Computing and Communication Foundations, under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070), will fund research at the University of California, San Diego to advance the theory and practice of cryptographic techniques.

The university will conduct mathematical proofs of security for widely-used digital signature schemes, authenticated encryption schemes, and two-party secure computation protocols used across the internet and in popular apps and cryptocurrencies. It will identify next-generation cryptography needs and develop new techniques accompanied by security proofs. A software tool called PlayCrypt will educate students in designing secure cryptography for industry. The grant will also support research to broaden participation of women in academia through identifying promising undergraduate women for Ph.D. programs and advancing women Ph.D. students to faculty positions.
