This $520,000 three-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) supports research into advancing the understanding of transition metal-carbon bonding through integrated spectroscopy and theory methods. Principal investigators Lucy Ziurys of the University of Arizona and Nathan Deyonker of the University of Memphis will combine experimental and computational approaches to explore the ground electronic states of small molecules containing transition metals. Their work will employ high-resolution gas-phase rotational spectroscopy techniques from 4 GHz to 850 GHz to investigate chemical bonding in metal carbide and acetylide species containing metals such as nickel, cobalt, titanium, and iron. Experimental results will be validated through higher-order ab initio calculations involving single reference coupled cluster and multi-reference configuration interaction theories. This collaborative effort aims to provide predictive theoretical and spectroscopic properties applicable to larger metal-carbon molecules relevant to catalysis, synthesis, materials chemistry, and chemical biology. A subaward of $100,000 supports the University of Memphis's contributions to the project integrating spectroscopy and theory from September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2025.
