The University of Michigan will receive $810,746 under a Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to conduct research on mathematical modeling of fluid free boundary problems. Specifically, researchers will develop mathematical tools to analyze the long-term behavior of water waves in two and three dimensions, with and without surface tension, as well as the interaction of ocean waves with rigid coastal boundaries. The project aims to advance understanding of fluid motions such as water waves and investigate higher-order integrability and long-term behaviors of solutions. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows will be involved to help prepare the next generation workforce. The two-year project period begins June 15, 2022 and ends May 31, 2025.
