This $379,600 National Science Foundation project grant supports research at Columbia University to develop autonomous micro-robots for navigation in complex microscopic environments. Specifically, the university will design time-varying magnetic fields to encode autonomous behavior of magnetic microparticles in response to gradients in surface topography and fluid velocity. Researchers will experimentally demonstrate particle navigation across landscapes and in microfluidic channels, informed by dynamical models and automated experiments. The grant also supports related education and outreach activities, including training graduate and undergraduate students and providing summer research opportunities for high school girls interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. This award advances the goals of the National Science Foundation Engineering program, which seeks to improve quality of life and economic strength through engineering innovation and excellence in research and education. The project period is from May 15, 2022 to April 30, 2025.
