This five-year, $812,324 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) supports the University of South Alabama's Investigating Science Teacher, Research, Education, and Methods Used to Prepare Pre-Service Science Teachers program. The program aims to address the national need for highly qualified K-12 science teachers, especially those from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds, through recruiting and preparing 16 science majors to obtain teaching certification via a post-baccalaureate program. Key services include a 10-week pre-residency classroom experience, integration of local community science field experiences to engage scholars in professional learning communities and help future students make real-world connections, and support for science post-baccalaureates. The program partners with local education agencies and organizations to strengthen the science teacher pipeline and is expected to increase student achievement at Title I schools. Evaluation will assess effectiveness of past scholars and factors influencing retention of career science teachers.
