This three-year, $391,703 National Science Foundation Project Grant under the Engineering (47.041) program will support the University of Texas at Dallas to operate a Research Experience for Undergraduates site focused on wind energy systems. The REU site will provide research experiences for 10 undergraduate students annually in areas such as modeling and measurements, diagnostic and control systems, and design and manufacturing for wind energy technologies. Students will engage in projects to increase understanding of wind energy systems and support strategic goals to achieve 35% wind power contribution to the electric grid by 2050. Activities are designed to stimulate long-term learning and career preparation in renewable energy fields, with a focus on recruiting and supporting underserved groups. Outcomes will include advancing simulation, experimental measurement techniques, control algorithms, diagnostic methods, materials development and additive manufacturing for wind turbines and farms. The REU site aims to help meet national priorities for a skilled renewable energy workforce and contribute to innovation in wind power technologies.
