Northeastern University was awarded a $404,391 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation under the Engineering federal grant program (CFDA 47.041) to establish a Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site. The three-year REU Site will host 10 community college students each summer to participate in research projects focused on the field of smart engineering, including artificial intelligence/machine learning, smart infrastructures, smart materials, and smart health. Students will be paired with faculty and graduate student teams to gain hands-on research experience. They will also receive training in teamwork, communication skills, and exposure to STEM careers through field trips and professional development opportunities. The goals of the REU Site are to provide underrepresented community college students with interdisciplinary research experience and showcase their work, with outcomes of increasing diversity in the STEM workforce and advancing national priorities in personalized learning and scientific discovery.
