This three-year, $407,212 National Science Foundation project grant will support the "Airborne Connections" Research Experience for Undergraduates site at Colorado State University. The site will recruit and train 30 diverse undergraduate students to study airborne contaminants through measurement, modeling, and analysis of their emission sources, atmospheric transport, spatial variation, health and climate impacts. Students will gain technical skills in measurement and modeling while interacting with professionals to understand complex human-natural interactions and interdisciplinary solutions. Specific objectives include providing research experiences for underrepresented students, fostering STEM career skills, and systematically recruiting first-generation and non-traditional participants. Students will design sensors, develop remote sensing, explain air concentration variation, interpret model health and climate impacts, and develop mitigation strategies. Along with technical training, students will learn about disproportionate contaminant effects on low-income communities and reduced resilience. The award falls under the NSF Engineering Directorate's CFDA 47.041 program to foster innovation and excellence in engineering research and education nationally.
