This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Computer and Information Science and Engineering program provides $108,000 to Michigan State University to support an undergraduate research experience focused on autonomous vehicle algorithm development. Specifically, the award funds activities from March 2022 through February 2025 to allow students to gain hands-on experience designing, testing, and evaluating self-driving algorithms using street-legal electric vehicles on campus. Students will work to analyze and compare results from various autonomous driving algorithms tested in real-world environments. In addition to strengthening research skills, the project aims to increase underrepresented students' interest in careers involving autonomous vehicle research and development. Results from the program seek to advance knowledge around effective strategies for teaching self-driving concepts using real vehicles to improve undergraduate education.
