The University of Connecticut will provide mentoring, geospatial technology training, and digital media storytelling services to underrepresented youth under a $2.7 million Project Grant from the National Science Foundation. Funded through NSF's Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers program, the four-year award will engage up to 270 teens, 60 undergraduates, and 54 educators. Undergraduate students will be trained to serve as near-peer mentors for high school pods, guiding participants through short-term workshops and long-term community environmental projects. Digital stories created by teens will be shared publicly from August 2022 to July 2026 to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers. The goal is to explore how program elements like mentoring and storytelling can increase underrepresented youth's interests in STEM fields.
