This National Science Foundation award provides $332,486 to Michigan State University under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2025. The university will utilize an international ocean research expedition to study iodine cycling in the South Pacific and Southern Oceans. As part of the GEOTRACES program's goal of understanding trace element distributions in oceans, this project aims to constrain the relative impacts of biogeochemical and physical mixing processes on iodine species distributions across an ocean basin through two mass balance studies. Graduate and undergraduate students will be supported to conduct iodine speciation measurements along a meridional transect and compute water mass abundances via parameter analysis. The lead investigator and a graduate student will also engage in K-12 science communication activities through the university museum.
