The National Science Foundation awarded Whatcom Community College $686,975 under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to develop and implement an integrated learning community called PEEC3. PEEC3 aims to better prepare community college students for engineering studies and careers by developing a two-quarter curriculum that combines courses in engineering, mathematics, English, history and design computing. The integrated curriculum blurs traditional disciplinary boundaries and incorporates high-impact practices like contextualized mathematics and English, service learning, and undergraduate research. A cohort of 24 students will complete the two-quarter sequence intended to accelerate their progression, improve learning outcomes, and reduce equity gaps compared to the existing early engineering program. Project outcomes will be assessed using mixed methods to evaluate the program's ability to address preparation disparities and increase course success, retention and associate degree completion in engineering transfer pathways. Results will also be disseminated to influence modular curriculum adoption at other institutions.
