This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Environmental Biology provides $592,543 to Temple University for research under the Biological Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.074).
The research aims to advance understanding of Haemosporida species delimitation through an integrated approach combining morphological, molecular, and ecological data. It will generate new knowledge on the processes driving Haemosporidian species diversity by studying newly detected species in host clades across their distribution in distinct African biomes. The research also seeks to enrich biodiversity sciences by developing standards for symbiont-host data integration and generate new knowledge on regional herpetofauna through specimen collection and metadata. This work will provide insights into regional evolutionary and ecological processes by considering Haemosporida as true elements of biodiversity rather than as traits or pathogens of their hosts. The period of performance is from June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2025.
