The goal is to discover new and productive photochemical pathways that can enable sustainable chemical synthesis. The research aims to (i) uncover novel photochemical reactivity, (ii) employ modern photochemical tools to develop knowledge about excited state...
- The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $600,000 Project Grant under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to Professor Lei Zhu at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Florida State University. The grant supports research to develop photosensitive organic compounds with interesting emission or photochemical properties. The goal is to understand the factors, structural or environmental, that control the behaviors of these compounds in response to...
- This National Science Foundation Project Grant award of $450,000 provides funding from July 2022 through June 2025 for mechanistic organic photochemistry research at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. The principal investigator, Professor Alexander Greer, will analyze oxygen-involving photochemical reactions and subsequent downstream processes to delineate primary from secondary, tertiary, and quaternary photo-oxidation mechanisms. This work aims to improve control of bacterial...
- This Project Grant award of $555,000 from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Chemistry, under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), supports research by Professor James Allen and Dr. Joann Williams of Arizona State University to study how proteins control proton-coupled electron transfer reactions. The researchers aim to create reversible, long-lived electron and proton transfer processes that mimic biological systems. By manipulating bacterial reaction...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) provides $249,999 to Rowan University to support research on the development of photocatalytic conditions to generate cyclic compounds, heterocycles, and desulfonylation methods using aryl tosylates. The goal is to provide fundamental knowledge on visible-light-mediated, single-electron-transfer methods and resulting divergent mechanisms dependent upon photocatalyst selection....
- Federal Grant Award Summary This collaborative research project grant of $260,096, awarded September 1, 2025, through the National Science Foundation's Division of Chemistry under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), supports fundamental research into strained cyclic photoswitches conducted by Professor Michael Kienzler at the University of Connecticut and Professor Steven Lopez at Northeastern University. The primary deliverable is the advancement of knowledge regarding...
- This federal Project Grant award, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program, supports research by Professor Andrew Musser of Cornell University to understand how light-matter interactions can be used to control the properties of molecules. The $522,354 award, with a performance period from May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2028, will enable Professor Musser and his students to apply ultrafast laser-based techniques to study how...
- Summary of Federal Project Grant Award The University of Connecticut, Department of Chemistry, received a $271,019 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Chemistry under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), awarded September 1, 2025, with completion targeted for August 31, 2028. This $229,307 National Science Foundation Project Grant under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program will support research into developing new classes of molecules that can undergo the exchange of protons in response to light. Specifically, Principal Investigator Kana Takematsu of Bowdoin College will utilize Schiff base chemistry to design and study photo-acids and photo-bases with the goal of controlling proton donation and abstraction temporally and spatially via light. Three aims are outlined: 1) testing Schiff bases as suitable scaffolds for naphthol photo-acid derivatives, 2) testing for quinoline photo-base derivatives, and 3) coupling carbon-nitrogen double bond photo-isomerization to excited state proton transfer through addition of pyridine and phenol groups. In addition to advancing fundamental understanding of excited state proton transfer, the project integrates undergraduate research interns from diverse backgrounds to foster inclusive science learning. The five-year award period began July 1, 2022.
