This $696,515 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) supports research and outreach on variations in the pace of surface temperature change. The awardee, University of California Santa Cruz, will conduct statistical analysis of global climate observations to identify regions and periods with accelerated warming rates over the past two centuries. Model simulations will determine the causes of detected changes and quantify future warming rates through 2100. Two graduate students will assist with the research. Additionally, the awardee will develop freely available digital and interactive resources on climate and environmental data science using R programming, aimed at students, educators, managers, policymakers, and the public. This includes an open-source digital book and a user-friendly dashboard visualized by undergraduate students to monitor temperature change pace in different world regions including Indigenous lands. The resources help fill gaps in environmental sciences curricula and engage stakeholders on regions experiencing accelerated warming rates informed by the research.
