The project will develop physics-informed deep learning algorithms and open-source tools to advance understanding of polar ice sheet dynamics and their implications for sea-level change. Key deliverables include DIFFICE.JAX, an open-source...
- The Leland Stanford Junior University was awarded a $163,981 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs under the Polar Programs federal grant program (CFDA 47.078). The grant will fund collaborative research to investigate four decades of subsurface change beneath the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica using historical and modern radar sounding data. The research aims to strengthen fundamental understanding of the polar regions by expanding knowledge of ice shelf...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs awarded a $245,046 Project Grant to Stanford University under the Polar Programs federal grant program (CFDA 47.078) to develop and field test community-driven ice penetrating radar systems for observing complex ice sheet structure and flow. Specifically, the award will support developing a snowmobile-towed radar and unmanned aerial vehicle radar system based on shared software and post-processing tools. Both systems are designed to...
- This $870,804 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) will support a 5-year research project at the University of Washington focused on improving the representation of small-scale sea ice processes in climate models. The key objectives are to refine the modeling of sea ice deformation and fractures at the floe scale, and establish connections between these small-scale dynamics and larger-scale sea ice behavior. This will involve a...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Polar Programs award provided $362,278 to the University of Washington from July 2021 to May 2023 to support collaborative research titled "A New Mechanistic Framework for Modeling Rift Processes in Antarctic Ice Shelves Validated Through Improved Strain-Rate and Seismic Observations." The NSF Polar Programs' CFDA number 47.078 aims to strengthen understanding of polar regions through basic research. Under this project grant, the University of...
- This $411,096 federal Project Grant award was provided by the National Science Foundation's Polar Programs (CFDA 47.078) to The Leland Stanford Junior University (Stanford University). The project aims to utilize machine learning and physics-based models to map and understand how surface meltwater on the Greenland ice sheet reaches the bedrock, which can impact ice sheet dynamics and response to climate change. Key products and services to be delivered include: Development of open-source deep...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs, under the Polar Programs federal grant program (CFDA 47.078), provides $269,022 to support research aimed at improving ice shelf instability and breakup modeling. Specifically, the University of California, Los Angeles will develop a new component for the continental-scale Ice Sheet and Sea Level System Model to simulate surface meltwater-induced flexure, fracture, and large-scale ice shelf breakup. To achieve...
- The National Science Foundation's Division of Polar Programs awarded a $899,856 project grant to The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York, on August 15, 2023. The funding supports a collaborative U.S./U.K. research project investigating the direct influence of meltwater on the dynamics of the Antarctic ice sheet. The key activities include a field campaign on Flade Glacier and a continent-wide remote sensing survey to test hypotheses related to how surface meltwater reaching...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation provided $124,081 to Princeton University from January 1, 2022 through October 31, 2022. The funding supported basic research under the Polar Programs federal grant program. The Polar Programs program, listed under the CFDA as 47.078, aims to strengthen understanding of polar regions through expanding fundamental knowledge. This award directly supported research related to calving icebergs and climate in Antarctica, consistent with the...
- The University of Wyoming received a $297,116 project grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs on November 1, 2021 for collaborative research under the Polar Programs federal grant program (CFDA 47.078). The research aims to establish an Arctic observing network to monitor the transformation of the Greenland ice sheet's firn layer through October 31, 2026. The Polar Programs grant program supports basic research best conducted in or about the polar regions to...
The National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Polar Programs awarded $684,964 under the Polar Programs federal grant program (CFDA 47.078) to Stanford University. The five-year project grant funding will support research and development of customized numerical models to understand the possibility and implications of an internal shear band forming in ice flowing over rough topography. Specifically, the principal investigator will develop a suite of open-source tools to test the hypothesis that strain localization in ice just above topographic highs could lead to creep instability and formation of an internal shear band, similar to sliding. Modeling efforts will identify nondimensional conditions for internal shear band formation over idealized beds, generalize insights to more realistic fractal topographies, and produce continental-scale assessments of potential locations in Greenland and Antarctica where this phenomenon could occur. Educational outreach for high-school students from disadvantaged communities also aligned with NSF's statutory mission to broaden participation in polar science.
