This National Science Foundation project grant of $477,672 will fund the development and dissemination of online reasoning chain construction assessment tools for introductory physics and chemistry courses from November 1, 2022 to October 31, 2027. Under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076), a research team from North Dakota State University, University of Maine, Penn State University - Greater Allegheny, and University of North Florida will work to examine and improve student reasoning skills. Specifically, the team will 1) develop, refine, and disseminate Online Reasoning Chain Construction Assessment tools, 2) generate screening-target question pairs to measure disciplinary knowledge and reasoning skills, 3) study cross-disciplinary student reasoning patterns, and 4) create instructor guides for assessment and instructional use of the tools. Results will be shared through publications, workshops, and online access to developed resources and support for pilot site implementation.
