The Regents of the University of Colorado received a three-year, $1,149,515 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences to support research titled "Nanomechanics of Tubulin Extraction from Microtubules and Adhesin Catch-Bond Rupture." The grant is part of NSF's Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074), which aims to advance fundamental knowledge in biology and strengthen the Nation's scientific enterprise. Under this award, University of Colorado researchers in Boulder, Colorado will conduct experiments and analyses to better understand the mechanical properties and behaviors of microtubule polymers and adhesion bonds at the molecular level. Specifically, the researchers will work to elucidate the forces involved in extracting tubulin subunits from microtubule structures, as well as rupturing catch bonds that link adhesin proteins. Insights from this research could provide new knowledge with applications across cell and molecular biology. The three-year period of performance for this work is January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2025.
