This National Science Foundation project grant award of $249,068 provides funding from February 1, 2022 through January 31, 2025 to support collaborative research understanding the influence of tectonic setting on the depth of magmatic processes in the mid-ocean ridge system. Funded under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which supports basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences to expand fundamental knowledge and understanding of the integrated Earth system, this award will allow the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to conduct chemical analysis of microscopic melt inclusions and crystals from ocean floor basalts. The research aims to better constrain the depth and distribution of magma formation and differentiation processes in different mid-ocean ridge environments by investigating plagioclase ultraphyric basalts from a range of tectonic settings and spreading rates. Results will provide new insights into the comparative depth of olivine and plagioclase crystallization, the depth dependence of mid-ocean ridge differentiation processes, and the use of carbon and trace element ratios to estimate the mantle carbon budget. Outreach to students at South Dakota tribal colleges is also supported.
