This $156,128 project grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Polar Programs will fund research at Oregon State University to understand massive phytoplankton blooms over the Australian-Antarctic Ridge. Over three years, the university will conduct collaborative research with satellite and ship-based measurements to study a poorly understood phytoplankton bloom in the northwestern Ross Sea sector of the Southern Ocean. Researchers will implement numerical models and target shipboard sampling using available satellite data and preliminary model results to optimize sampling of the bloom. A 40-day process study cruise is planned for the Austral summer to collect hydrographic and biological data to characterize the bloom and investigate links between deep dissolved iron reservoirs and surface phytoplankton productivity. The award supports the NSF's mission to strengthen polar research as outlined in the Polar Programs grant program (CFDA 47.078).
